The Port d'Envalira is a mountain pass in the Pyrenees, and at an altitude of 2,408 meters, it is the highest paved road pass in the entire mountain range. It connects the towns of Encamp and Pas de la Casa, serving as a vital transport link between Andorra and France. Geographically, the pass marks the drainage divide between the Atlantic Ocean (via the Ariège river) and the Mediterranean Sea (via the Valira d'Orient). Historically, the passage was often blocked by snow for months until the opening of the Envalira Tunnel in 2002, which provides year-round accessibility beneath the summit. The pass is globally renowned for its frequent inclusion in major cycling races such as the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. At the summit, there are petrol stations, shops, and a meteorological station that records extreme sub-zero temperatures and high winds. The view from the top has a remarkable panorama of the Eastern Pyrenees and the Grandvalira ski slopes. Despite the tunnel, the pass road remains a popular route for tourists and cycling enthusiasts.
