The Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) is the majestic ruler of the sprawling forests surrounding Encamp. These large mammals thrive in the dense Pyrenean woodlands, which offer them cool shade and protection during the daylight hours. As dusk approaches, they often emerge into the high alpine meadows to graze on fresh grasses and herbs. The most dramatic time for the red deer population in Encamp is the autumn rut, typically occurring from late September to October. During this period, the powerful roars of the stags echo through the valleys as they compete for dominance and the attention of the hinds. Adult males grow impressive antlers, which are shed each year and regrown with increasing complexity as they age. Observing these elusive giants requires stealth and silence, as they are highly sensitive to human presence. The presence of red deer in Encamp is a testament to the integrity of Andorra’s mountain corridors and the vastness of its protected forest lands.
