Mount Sabyinyo Peak

Mount Sabyinyo, whose name means 'Old Man's Tooth', is an extinct volcano and one of the eight major peaks of the Virunga Mountains. Its summit, at 3,669 meters, is geographically unique as it marks the tripoint of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its jagged, eroded summit, which gives it its name, is the result of eons of weathering on the volcanic rock. The mountain is located within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Virunga National Park in the DRC. The slopes of Sabyinyo are covered in distinct vegetation zones, including extensive bamboo forests at lower altitudes, which are a vital habitat for the critically endangered mountain gorilla. Higher up, the bamboo gives way to a zone of heath and finally Afro-alpine vegetation. The ascent to the peak from the Ugandan side is a challenging trek that requires navigating handmade wooden ladders across deep gorges. The summit provides an exceptional panoramic view into all three countries.
