💡 Tips
- Wear layers even during the day, as Nyabihu's mountain climate is significantly cooler and mistier than the rest of Rwanda.
- Visit the Mukamira area to try the country's best dairy products, especially the local cheese and fresh yogurt.
- Head out to the tea plantations in the early morning for the best views when the mist hangs low over the hills.
- Always carry a raincoat, as the proximity to the volcanic chain means weather can change very quickly.
- Use moto-taxis to navigate the steeper hillsides where larger vehicles might struggle to go quickly.
🍽 Food
Try the Gouda-style local cheese found in small shops along the main road in the Mukamira sector.
Enjoy these grilled skewers at local roadside eateries, typically served with roasted plantains (muzuzu).
Look for local 'Milk Bars' where you can get fresh, thick yogurt served in cups.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy locally packaged black tea directly from the factory outlets near the plantations.
Because of the cold climate, local markets often stock hand-knitted sweaters and hats.
Walk along the narrow paths between tea bushes for absolute peace and crisp mountain air.
Find the higher ridges on the outskirts for a clear view of the Karisimbi volcano on clear days.

Nyabihu is a district and town in the Western Province of Rwanda, stretching along the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. The region is located at a high altitude, which results in a cool climate good for growing potatoes, wheat, and vegetables. Nyabihu is particularly known for its dairy farming and cheese production, which has earned it the nickname 'Rwanda's Switzerland'. The landscape is characterized by terraced hills and lush vegetation. The town of Mukamira is the most important commercial center of the district. Nyabihu is also a gateway to the Gishwati-Mukura National Park, a newly designated national park known for its chimpanzees and reforestation efforts. Tourism is still in its infancy but has potential, especially in the area of agritourism and nature observation.
