Water temperature…
Yovon lies some 60 kilometres south-east of Dushanbe in a broad basin within Khatlon Province and was founded in the 1960s as a Soviet industrial town. Its rise was linked to construction of the Vakhsh, Yovon Canal, a daring underground water diversion that transformed the arid valley into a fertile cotton and fruit-growing region. Today around 30,000 people live in Yovon, mostly working in agriculture, in the chemical industry, and at one of Central Asia’s most modern cement plants, built with Chinese investment. The cityscape is defined by Soviet architecture, broad avenues, and large prefabricated housing districts. Nearby lie the remains of ancient fortresses, while on the fertile plain traditional Tajiks live alongside Pamiri and Gharm families resettled from the mountains, making Yovon an ethnographically intriguing area.
