Kulob in southern Tajikistan can trace its history back more than 2,700 years, making it one of the country’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Resting at about 600 metres at the foot of the Hazrati-Sho range, it is now home to roughly 105,000 people. In the 17th and 18th centuries Kulob served as the capital of an independent khanate and an important link on the southern caravan routes from Bukhara to India. Its most celebrated landmark is the mausoleum of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadoni, the 14th-century Persian Sufi mystic and poet who played a key role in spreading Islam to Kashmir. The city is also politically prominent, being the home region of many of the country’s contemporary elites. Its economy revolves around food processing, textiles, and tobacco, while an upgraded airport now connects the region to international routes.
