Panj River Views

From safe, permitted viewpoints, look out over the mighty river that acts as the physical border with Afghanistan.

Hamadoni, formerly Moskovskiy, lies in the south of Khatlon Province, just a few kilometres from the Afghan border on the Panj River. It is one of the country’s southernmost district centres and has carried its current name since 2003, in honour of the Sufi saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadoni. The district has roughly 130,000 inhabitants, of whom about 25,000 live in the town itself. Economically, Hamadoni is a hub for cotton and pomegranate production, while its position along the Panj gives it a key logistical role, with several bridges and markets linking Tajikistan and Afghanistan. During the 1980s Soviet, Afghan War, Moskovskiy served as an important base for the Soviet border guards. Today the town acts as a gateway for development programmes by the Aga Khan Development Network and the United Nations, building schools, bridges, and market facilities throughout the area.
