Bor Fishery Center (South Sudan)

Weather…

Bor Fishery Center, located in Jonglei State along the White Nile, is the largest inland fishing hub in South Sudan, with an annual catch of about 15,000 tons. The center supports 6,000-8,000 fishers using both traditional canoes and motorized boats. Major species include Nile perch, tilapia, and catfish. The facility includes a 500-ton cold storage and a processing plant producing sun-dried and smoked fish. The fishing season peaks from November to May. Exports to Uganda and DRC are growing but limited by poor roads. In 2022, a fish feed mill was established to promote aquaculture, and tilapia fingerlings are now produced locally. Overfishing has reduced Nile perch stocks; catch per unit effort dropped from 20 kg/day in 2015 to 12 kg/day in 2023.
