Mongalla Game Reserve is located on the eastern bank of the White Nile in Central Equatoria State, just north of Juba. Spanning approximately 750 square kilometers, the reserve is a crucial sanctuary for wildlife within the Sudd region. It is internationally famous for hosting the massive seasonal migration of White-eared Kob and Tiang antelopes, which is considered one of the largest mammal migrations on Earth. The ecosystem is a mosaic of seasonally flooded plains, acacia woodlands, and expansive grasslands sustained by the Nile's hydrological cycles. Established in 1939, it ranks among the oldest protected areas in South Sudan and has a long history of wildlife management. The reserve's location along the Nile ensures perennial water sources, which are vital for fauna during the prolonged dry seasons. Current efforts focus on developing sustainable ecotourism to provide economic alternatives to the local population while ensuring animal protection.

Best season

The best time to visit is the dry season from December to March, when antelopes and other ungulates concentrate near the Nile. During the rainy season (April to November) animals are spread over a wider area due to plentiful water and food.

Early morning and late afternoon hours are most productive, as animals go to waterholes and search for food. During midday heat, most species rest in the shade of trees or bushes.

Never leave the vehicle during game drives - this is necessary both for your safety and to protect the animals. Keep a minimum distance of 50 meters from wildlife and avoid sudden movements or loud noises.

What to bring

A good pair of binoculars (10× magnification) is recommended to see antelopes and birds in detail even from a distance. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and a hat - temperatures can be very high even in the dry season.

Getting there

Mongalla Game Reserve is located about 30 kilometers northeast of Juba along the Nile. Access is best with a 4×4 vehicle, as road conditions can be difficult, especially during the rainy season.

Animal density here is lower than in some East African parks - do not expect to see dozens of antelopes at once. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and scan the landscape; migratory birds are a special highlight during the dry season.
