💡 Tips
- Use the city as a gateway to Nyungwe National Park; the drive to the park entrance takes about an hour.
- Head to the hills of Kamembe for panoramic views over Lake Kivu and the Congolese coastline.
- Check visa requirements carefully if you plan to cross the Ruzizi bridge into Bukavu (DRC).
- The town is very steep; moto-taxis are the best way to get between the lakefront and the upper town center.
- Ask at lakeside hotels about boat trips to nearby islands for a peaceful nature getaway.
🍽 Food
Try the grilled tilapia at lakeside eateries, often prepared with a signature spicy onion garnish.
These small lake fish are a local specialty here too, best enjoyed with a cold local banana beer (Urwagwa).
Thanks to the warmer lakeside climate, mangos and avocados are exceptionally large and sweet in this region.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
A bustling market featuring many goods from the DRC, especially known for a wide variety of fabrics.
Visit early in the morning to see local fishermen unloading the night's catch of Sambaza fish.
A quiet stretch along the lake away from the main traffic, first-rate for a peaceful evening walk.
The less developed hilltops offer serenity and a vast view over the Ruzizi river valley.

Rusizi, whose main center is Cyangugu, is located at the southernmost tip of Lake Kivu and functions as an important border town with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The city is directly connected to the Congolese city of Bukavu by a bridge over the Rusizi River, making it one of the busiest border crossings in the country. Trade between the two cities is intense and forms the economic backbone of the region. Rusizi is divided into two main parts: the administrative and commercial core of Cyangugu and the nearby airport town of Kamembe. The scenic beauty, marked by the lake and the proximity to Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa's oldest rainforests, features considerable tourist potential. The region is also known for its tea plantations, which benefit from the humid climate.
