Nyarubuye Genocide Memorial (Rwanda)

Weather…

The Nyarubuye Memorial, a former school and church, is located near the Tanzanian border. Thousands of Tutsi refugees gathered here hoping for safety but were betrayed by the mayor, who led the attack. Thousands were killed, with many trying to flee to Tanzania across the nearby Akagera River, only to drown. The memorial preserves the church and classrooms in a state similar to how they were found after the massacre. Rusted machetes, tools, and personal effects are displayed alongside the remains of the victims. This juxtaposition of everyday objects and the tools of murder is particularly harrowing, emphasizing the sudden and extreme violence that befell the community. Nyarubuye serves as a testament to the betrayal by local authorities and the desperate escape attempts of many.
