Nyaruguru is a district in the deep south of Rwanda, on the border with Burundi. Its capital is Kibeho. The district is very rural and mountainous and borders the Nyungwe National Park. Nyaruguru is world-famous as the location of Kibeho, the only Vatican-approved site of Marian apparitions in Africa. This makes Kibeho an important international pilgrimage destination. The district's economy is based almost exclusively on agriculture, with tea being the main source of income. The vast tea plantations shape the landscape. Due to its remote location and difficult terrain, infrastructure is a challenge, but pilgrimage tourism is bringing some development to the region. The proximity to Nyungwe Forest has additional potential for ecotourism.
