Muhanga, formerly Gitarama, is a crucial transportation hub and the second largest city in Rwanda. It is strategically located in the center of the country, at the crossroads of the main roads connecting Kigali with the west and south. This location has made Muhanga a bustling commercial center, known for its busy markets and as an important transshipment point for agricultural products from the surrounding regions. The city is also a center for small and medium-sized enterprises, including the processing of minerals such as cassiterite and coltan. During the 1994 genocide, Gitarama was temporarily the seat of the interim government, which is a dark spot in its history. Today, the city is a symbol of Rwanda's rapid economic growth outside the capital.
