Kibeho is a small town in the Nyaruguru district of southern Rwanda that has gained worldwide fame. It is the only Vatican-approved site of Marian apparitions on the African continent. Between 1981 and 1989, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to several young people here. These apparitions, which contained messages of prayer, repentance, and a pre-warning of the 1994 genocide, were officially recognized by the Catholic Church in 2001. Since then, Kibeho has become a major international pilgrimage site. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Kibeho attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from Rwanda and around the world every year. The town's economy is heavily focused on religious tourism, with accommodation, restaurants, and shops catering to pilgrims.
