Butterfly Farm Boquete (Panama)

Weather…

The Butterfly Farm (Mariposario) in Boquete is an ecological showcase project in the western highlands of Panama. In large, net-covered tropical gardens, thousands of butterflies from dozens of endemic species fly freely. The most spectacular species is the huge, iridescent blue Morpho butterfly (Morpho peleides). The Mariposario serves to breed and protect these insects, whose natural habitats are shrinking due to pesticide use and deforestation. Visitors can observe the complete, fascinating life cycle of metamorphosis in detail here, from the egg, through the caterpillar and pupa, to the adult butterfly. The center also does valuable educational work on the essential role of butterflies as pollinators in tropical ecosystems.
