Fortuna Forest Reserve (Panama)

Weather…

The Fortuna Forest Reserve (Reserva Forestal Fortuna) is located high in the mountains of Chiriquí province on the continental divide. This 19,000-hectare area of primary montane rainforest and cloud forest was protected in the 1970s, primarily to secure the sensitive watershed of the Río Chiriquí, which feeds the massive Fortuna Dam, Panama's largest hydroelectric power plant. The extreme humidity and rugged terrain create habitats for jaguars, pumas, rare harlequin frogs, and hundreds of bird species. Scientists from the Smithsonian Institute use the research station in the reserve to study climate change and its effects on these high-altitude ecosystems, as cloud forests are particularly sensitive to temperature changes.
