Đurđevi Stupovi (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery near Berane is one of the most important religious monuments in northern Montenegro. It was founded in 1213 by Stefan Prvoslav, the nephew of Stefan Nemanja, and for centuries was the seat of the Budimlja diocese. The architecture of the monastery church, dedicated to Saint George, represents a significant link between the Byzantine style and the Romanesque architecture of the coastal region. In its over 800-year history, the monastery was burned down five times by the Ottomans and rebuilt each time by the local population, making it a symbol of resistance. The preserved fresco fragments inside depict biblical scenes and portraits of the Nemanjić dynasty. Today, Đurđevi Stupovi is the spiritual heart of the region and serves as the cathedral of the Eparchy of Budimlja-Nikšić.
