Berane is a town in northeastern Montenegro and the administrative center of the Polimlje region on the Lim River. The town was officially founded in 1862 by the Ottomans, but the area has a deep medieval history as part of the Serbian state. Between 1949 and 1992, the town bore the name Ivangrad in honor of the partisan hero Ivan Milutinović. Berane is surrounded by high mountains such as Bjelasica and serves as a gateway to numerous national parks. Significant archaeological sites from the Neolithic and medieval periods are located near the town. Today, Berane is an educational center with several faculties and is known for its sporting tradition, particularly in handball. The town's cultural life is enriched by the Polimlje Museum, which exhibits important artifacts of regional history.
