Japca Monastery (Moldova)

Weather…

Japca Monastery, situated on the right bank of the Dniester River in the Florești District, is a cornerstone of Moldovan Orthodox spirituality. Established in the late 17th century, around 1693, it holds the distinction of being the only monastery in Moldova that remained operational throughout the entire Soviet era. The complex features a historic cave church carved into the limestone cliff and a central stone church dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which dates back to the 19th century. Its architectural ensemble reflects a blend of traditional Moldovan styles and Neoclassical influences. The site is also famous for its multiple holy springs, which attract numerous pilgrims seeking spiritual and physical healing. Positioned on a natural terrace, the monastery gives a commanding view of the river landscape and the border with Ukraine. Today, it remains an active nunnery where the sisters maintain extensive gardens and preserve ancient religious traditions and liturgical chants.
