Florești is a significant city in northern Moldova, situated along the scenic banks of the Răut River. The area features a very ancient history of human settlement, with archaeological excavations uncovering remains of the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture dating back to the 4th millennium BC. The modern town began to flourish in the 19th century as it developed into a major commercial and industrial hub for the region. A pivotal factor in its urban expansion was the establishment of the railway, which linked Florești to other major economic centers in Moldova. Today, the local economy is anchored by the food processing industry, notably sugar production and dairy manufacturing. Florești serves as the administrative capital of the Florești District and is home to several cultural institutions, including a regional history museum. A notable landmark is the historic iron bridge spanning the Răut River, a testament to early 20th-century engineering. Its location makes it a vital transit point in the northern part of the country.
