Lija Belvedere Tower (Malta)

Weather…

The Lija Belvedere Tower is an iconic landmark in the village of Lija, Malta, representing one of the most elegant examples of 19th-century garden architecture. Built in 1857 as a decorative folly within the gardens of Villa Gourgion, the tower was intended to serve as a private viewing platform (belvedere) for the wealthy Gourgion family. It was designed by the acclaimed Maltese architect Giuseppe Bonavia, who skillfully blended Neoclassical and Gothic Revival elements into its delicate limestone structure. The tower is celebrated for its fine stonework, slender proportions, and ornate battlements. Originally, it stood amidst lush citrus groves, which the area was famous for; however, urban development and the construction of the main road in the 1950s isolated the tower from the villa, leaving it on a traffic island today. Despite its modern surroundings, the Belvedere remains a beloved symbol of Lija and a testament to the island's aristocratic heritage. It has been meticulously restored and continues to greet visitors at the village entrance.
