Kudahuvadhoo is the largest island and capital of Dhaalu Atoll, located around 160 kilometers south of Malé. The island is home to about 2400 residents and is rapidly developing into an important hub for local tourism, especially since Dhaalu Airport opened in 2017, allowing direct flights from Malé. Historically, Kudahuvadhoo is significant because ancient mounds and stone wall ruins, likely dating from the Buddhist era, were found here and documented by archaeologist Thor Heyerdahl in the 1980s. The economy is built on fishing, boat building and a growing number of guesthouses serving snorkeling and diving tourists. Nearby are top class dive sites such as Wreck Beyru and Kandimaa Thila, attracting manta rays, eagle rays and reef sharks. The island has a hospital, several schools, an atoll administration office and a modern sports stadium with a football pitch.
