Dhidhdhoo is the capital of Haa Alif Atoll, the northernmost administrative atoll of the Maldives, and lies only about 20 kilometers south of the boundary with Indian territorial waters. With around 3500 residents, the island forms the political and economic backbone of the district. Dhidhdhoo features a modern island harbor that handles most cargo ships for the northern atolls, as well as Haa Alif Atoll Hospital, one of the largest regional health facilities in the country with outpatient services, laboratory and maternity ward. There is also a police district headquarters, a Bank of Maldives branch and a courthouse. The economy is built on fishing, administration, boat building and a growing guesthouse tourism scene, with many uninhabited sandbanks and reefs accessible from here. A fast link to nearby Hanimaadhoo Airport, which is being expanded to international status from 2024, makes Dhidhdhoo a key gateway for the region.
