Hulhumalé is one of the most ambitious urban planning achievements of the Maldives, a fully artificial reclaimed island just north of Malé. Phase 1 was created between 1997 and 2002 by pumping sand from the Indian Ocean and was officially settled in 2004; Phase 2 doubled the area between 2015 and 2020 to roughly 4 square kilometers. Today over 100000 people live here, and the island was planned to relieve the acute overcrowding of Malé. The architecture is decidedly modern: wide boulevards, intersection-free residential neighborhoods, solar arrays, wind parks and an integrated recycling system. Since 2018, Hulhumalé has been directly linked to Malé and Velana International Airport via the 2.1 kilometer Sinamalé Bridge (Friendship Bridge). The island hosts hospitals, university faculties, the Tree Top Hospital, shopping centers such as Centro Mall and several public beaches. It is also raised to 2 meters for climate resilience, significantly higher than Malé itself.
