Naifaru is the main island and capital of Lhaviyani Atoll (officially Faadhippolhu) in the north of the Maldives. On a narrow land area of barely 39 hectares live around 5500 people, making Naifaru one of the most densely populated islands in the Maldives. Despite the cramped conditions, the island is a lively center for handicrafts, boat building and fishing. Naifaru is especially famous for producing dhivehi beys, traditional Maldivian herbal medicine, and for handcrafted jewelry made of imitation tortoiseshell and silver. The local NGO Atoll Marine Centre runs a sea turtle rehabilitation hospital that treats and releases injured marine turtles. The island harbor connects Naifaru to resorts such as Hurawalhi, Kanuhura and Komandoo, providing an important source of employment. A hospital expanded in 2019, several schools and a modern sports center make Naifaru a regional draw for the surrounding islands.
