Basilica of Saint Willibrord (Luxembourg)

Weather…

The Basilica of Saint Willibrord in Echternach is the most important religious building in Luxembourg and the centrepiece of the abbey founded in 698 by the Anglo-Saxon missionary Willibrord. The present-day basilica is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, faithfully rebuilt after its destruction in the Second World War. Its origins date back to the Merovingian period. The impressive interior, with its clean lines and monumental central nave, radiates an atmosphere of calm and spirituality. The most important place is the crypt, one of the oldest parts of the church, dating back to the 8th century. Here, the shrine of Saint Willibrord is kept in a magnificent marble sarcophagus. The basilica is the destination of the world-famous Echternach hopping procession, which takes place every year on Whit Tuesday and is part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is a deeply spiritual place and an architectural jewel of national and European importance.
