The Samina Valley is a prominent, deeply incised alpine valley in eastern Liechtenstein, extending over 17 kilometers into Austria. It is traversed by the Samina River, which originates at the foot of the Naafkopf and eventually flows into the Ill. The valley is largely uninhabited and is characterized by its wild, natural landscape, dominated by dense coniferous forests and steep rock faces. Historically, the valley served as an important route for pack animal drivers and mountain farmers transporting goods between the Rhine Valley and the Vorarlberg region. In the 20th century, the Samina Valley gained significance through hydroelectric power utilization, particularly the Samina power station in Steg, which contributes a substantial part of the country's energy supply. Today, the valley is a major local recreation area and is partially under nature protection to safeguard rare species such as the golden eagle and capercaillie. The valley's seclusion makes it a paradise for mountaineers and mountain bikers.
