Engländerbau (Liechtenstein)

Weather…

The Engländerbau in Vaduz is a prime example of classical modernism in Liechtenstein. Constructed between 1933 and 1934 according to designs by architect Erwin Hinderer, it was the first building in the country to utilize a steel frame construction. The name 'Engländerbau' (English Building) derives from its original purpose as the headquarters for a British trust company (The British and Foreign Trust Ltd). Its functionalist architecture, featuring clean lines and a flat roof, represented a radical departure from traditional Alpine building styles at the time. Today, the heritage-protected building in the center of Vaduz houses the Postal Museum of the Principality of Liechtenstein and additional exhibition spaces for the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. A major renovation at the end of the 20th century preserved the iconic facade while modernizing the interior for museum use. Standing as a symbol of Liechtenstein's international openness and economic growth during the interwar period, the Engländerbau is an indispensable part of the capital's cultural landscape.
