Schalun Ruins (Wildschloss) (Liechtenstein)

Weather…

The Schalun castle ruins, commonly known as Wildschloss, are situated on a rocky outcrop high above Vaduz. The castle was likely constructed in the late 12th century and served as a vantage point for monitoring traffic routes through the Rhine Valley. Archaeological excavations reveal that the complex consisted of a massive residential tower, a curtain wall, and an inner courtyard. Unlike many other castles in the region, Schalun was not destroyed by warfare; instead, it was likely abandoned in the late 15th century and left to decay. The walls are built from local limestone and still exhibit considerable thickness in several areas. Today, the ruins are a popular destination for hikers, offering spectacular views of the Rhine Valley and the Swiss mountains across the border. As one of the oldest remains of medieval fortification art in Liechtenstein, the site is protected by the state, with regular preservation work carried out to prevent further structural decline.
