Manchester Plateau (Jamaica)

Weather…

The Manchester Plateau is a prominent limestone highland in south-central Jamaica, rising over 600 meters above sea level. This plateau is characterized by its cool, misty climate and its exceptionally rugged karst topography, which includes numerous sinkholes and caves. The town of Mandeville is situated on this plateau and is known for having some of the cleanest air and most comfortable temperatures in Jamaica. Geologically, the plateau is part of the White Limestone group and is incredibly rich in bauxite, which has led to extensive mining and industrial activity in the region for over half a century. The soil is the classic red terra rossa, which is highly fertile for temperate crops and citrus. The plateau's relief acts as a natural barrier to the rain clouds coming from the south, resulting in high rainfall that supports lush vegetation and a thriving agricultural sector. It remains one of the most inhabited and economically significant highland areas in the Caribbean.
