Szigliget is one of the most beautifully situated villages on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, set on a peninsula characterized by several volcanic hills. The main attraction is the Szigliget Castle, constructed in the 13th century atop the 239-meter-high Várhegy. It was one of the few Hungarian fortresses never captured by the Ottomans, though it was later demolished in 1702 by order of Emperor Leopold I. The meticulously restored ruins now offer some of the most panoramic panoramic views of the lake and the nearby basalt peaks. At the base of the hill lies the Esterházy Mansion, which currently serves as a prestigious retreat for writers and is surrounded by a magnificent park. Szigliget is also renowned for its viticulture, particularly its white wines, and its well-preserved traditional thatched-roof houses. The village perfectly combines medieval history, literary heritage, and the natural splendor of the Balaton Uplands.
