Tihany Lavender Fields (Hungary)

Weather…

The Tihany lavender field is Hungary's first large-scale lavender plantation, established in 1924 by herbal expert Gyula Bittera. Bittera imported the propagation material directly from France, leveraging the unique Mediterranean-style microclimate of the Tihany Peninsula, enhanced by the volcanic soil and the reflection of Lake Balaton. The essential oil content and quality of the lavender grown here soon became world-famous, at times surpassing the quality of traditional French plantations. Today, the lavender fields have become a symbol of the peninsula, drawing thousands of visitors during the blooming season in June and July. Beyond its economic use, lavender is a cornerstone of local tourism, celebrated particularly during the annual Lavender Festival. The Lavender House Visitor Center provides insights into the history of cultivation and the volcanic origins of the area, as part of the Balaton Uplands National Park.
