Sümeg Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

The Castle of Sümeg is one of Hungary's best-preserved and most visually striking medieval fortresses, perched atop an isolated limestone hill 270 meters above sea level. Built in the late 13th century by the Bishop of Veszprém following the Mongol invasion, it was continuously expanded over the centuries to resist Ottoman expansion. Its strategic importance reached its peak in the 16th century when, after the fall of Veszprém in 1552, it became the temporary seat of the bishopric and the region's primary defensive bastion. The fortress is noted for its irregular polygonal layout, which follows the natural contours of the hill, and its robust wall system. Following extensive restoration in recent decades, the castle now features interactive exhibitions, an armory, and a blacksmith workshop. Sümeg is particularly famous for its historical knight tournaments and medieval banquets held in the arena at the foot of the hill, recreating the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The battlements offer a far-reaching panoramic view over the Bakony Mountains and the Balaton Uplands, making it a favorite destination for history enthusiasts.
