Kinizsi Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Kinizsi Castle in Nagyvázsony is a significant medieval fortress in the Bakony region, best known for its association with the legendary general Pál Kinizsi. Originally built in the early 15th century, the castle was gifted to Kinizsi by King Matthias Corvinus in 1472 as a reward for his repeated victories against the Ottoman Empire. The most striking feature of the stronghold is the 28-meter-high residential tower (donjon), which remains one of the best-preserved examples of late-Gothic architecture in Hungary. Kinizsi and his wife, Benigna Magyar, expanded the castle into a formidable fortress with a palace wing and a chapel. During the Ottoman wars, it functioned as a vital border outpost, frequently subject to military engagements. Today, the tower's floors house interactive exhibitions documenting medieval life, historical weaponry, and the Kinizsi family legacy. The inner courtyard comes alive in the summer with knightly tournaments and archery displays. The castle chapel serves as the final resting place for Pál Kinizsi, where his red marble sarcophagus can still be viewed by visitors.
