Sopron is located on Hungary's western border at the foot of the Alps and bears the title 'Most Loyal City' (Civitas Fidelissima) in memory of the 1921 referendum. The city's historical core already existed in Roman times under the name Scarbantia, the ruins of which are still visible beneath the city center. Its most famous landmark is the Firewatch Tower, which combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural elements and has a view of the medieval streets. The surrounding area is a famous wine-producing region, especially known for its Kékfrankos, with traditions dating back centuries. The Sopron Mountains surrounding the city and the nearby Lake Neusiedl provide excellent opportunities for hiking and nature trips. Sopron's cultural life is rich, with numerous museums, monuments, and festivals welcoming visitors year-round. Sopron continued to benefit in 2024-2025 from cross-border Austrian shopping and dental tourism, with the weak forint making the city especially attractive to Austrian visitors.
