Fertőd is world-famous for the Esterházy Palace, often referred to as the "Hungarian Versailles." It is the largest and most magnificent Baroque and Rococo palace in Hungary, completed in its present form between 1762 and 1766 by order of Prince Nikolaus I Esterházy. The palace features 126 rooms and is renowned for its opulent interior decoration and its vast French-style gardens. The town gained exceptional cultural significance through Joseph Haydn, who served as the court composer for the Esterházy family for nearly 30 years and composed the majority of his masterpieces here. The palace complex once included an opera house and a marionette theater, reflecting the bustling aristocratic life of the 18th century. Since 2001, the palace and the surrounding Fertő/Neusiedlersee cultural landscape have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Every year, international Haydn festivals are held in the palace's ceremonial hall, attracting music lovers from all over the globe.
