Normafa
Normafa is a premier outdoor destination located in the Buda Hills, situated at the highest point of Svábhegy at an elevation of approximately 477 meters. The area was named after an ancient beech tree where the famous opera singer Rozália Schodelné Klein performed the 'Casta Diva' aria from Bellini's opera Norma in 1840. This legendary tree stood for centuries as a symbol of the area until it was finally destroyed by lightning in 1927. Since the 19th century, Normafa has been a beloved retreat for artists, hikers, and families seeking fresh air and sweeping views of Budapest and the Pilis Mountains. During the winter months, it transforms into the city's primary hub for skiing and sledding, a tradition that dates back over a hundred years. The site is easily accessible via the historic Cogwheel Railway and the Children's Railway, adding to its nostalgic appeal. Several well-marked trails lead from Normafa to the nearby Elisabeth Lookout Tower on Janos Hill, the highest point in Budapest. The region is now a protected nature reserve with extensive facilities for jogging, hiking, and seasonal outdoor sports.
