Buda Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Buda Castle is the historic castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest, prominently situated on Castle Hill overlooking the Danube River. The construction of the first royal residence began in the 13th century following the Mongol invasion, under the reign of King Béla IV. Over the centuries, the complex suffered numerous destructions and was rebuilt in various styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. Today, the palace complex houses several major cultural institutions, such as the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. The entire Castle District, which also encompasses Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. Beneath the hill lies an extensive system of caves and labyrinths that once served military and storage purposes during historical conflicts. Offering some of the most spectacular views of the Hungarian Parliament and the Pest skyline, Buda Castle is a powerful symbol of Hungarian history and statehood. The detailed restoration work after World War II has preserved its architectural integrity for future generations.
