Gellért Hill
Gellért Hill is a prominent limestone ridge rising directly from the banks of the Danube in Budapest and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Reaching a height of 235 meters, it provides arguably the most spectacular panoramic view of the Hungarian capital and its historic bridges. The hill is named after Saint Gerard (Gellért), a bishop who was martyred here during a pagan uprising in the 11th century. At the summit sits the Citadella, a massive fortress built by the Habsburgs in 1851 following the suppression of the 1848 Revolution to monitor the city below. Standing tall in front of the fortress is the 14-meter Liberty Statue, erected in 1947 to commemorate the liberation of Budapest. The hill's slopes house unique landmarks such as the Cave Church, built into a natural cavern, and the world-famous Gellért Thermal Baths at its base. With its winding paths and historic monuments, the hill remains a top destination for hikers and history enthusiasts alike.
