Santa Catarina Pinula is one of the oldest and most affluent municipalities in the Guatemala Department, directly bordering the southern districts of the capital city. The town's founding dates back to the early Spanish colonial era in the 16th century when Dominican missionaries established the settlement as part of their missionary reductions. The name 'Pinula' is derived from a Nahuatl word for a beverage made from cornmeal and water, highlighting the indigenous roots of the region. Geographically, the municipality is situated in a hilly terrain at about 1500 meters above sea level, providing a mild climate and spectacular views of the Guatemala Valley. Over the last few decades, Santa Catarina Pinula has transformed from a rural agricultural community into an exclusive residential and business district. It is home to some of the country's most luxurious housing developments and modern office complexes. Despite rapid modernization, the historic center of the town retains its colonial charm and remains a symbol of the region's deep-rooted history.
