In summer Siegen's city centre hosts a large festival with stages, music and food stalls. It is one of the biggest events in the South Westphalia region.
Siegen is a university city in the Arnsberg district of North Rhine-Westphalia and functions as the primary center for the South Westphalia region. The city is inseparably linked to the name of the painter Peter Paul Rubens, who was born here in 1577, which is why it officially calls itself the 'City of Rubens' (Rubensstadt). Architecturally, the cityscape is characterized by the Upper and Lower Palaces, which were former residences of the Nassau rulers and now house museums. Historically, Siegen was a significant center for iron smelting and mining for centuries, based on the rich ore deposits in the Siegerland. The Siegerland Museum today shows the development of these industries as well as an extensive collection of works by the Baroque painter Rubens. As a modern educational city, Siegen is home to a university with around 18,000 students, who contribute significantly to the cultural and economic dynamics of the region.
