The Externsteine in the Teutoburg Forest is a striking sandstone rock formation that ranks among Germany's most significant natural and cultural monuments. These rocks, reaching heights of up to 40 meters, were formed approximately 70 million years ago during the Cretaceous period and were later transformed into a sacred site through human intervention in the Middle Ages. Particularly famous is the monumental relief of the Descent from the Cross, carved directly into the rock in the 12th century, which is considered a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture. The site also features an artificial grotto, a chapel, and an upper chamber whose astronomical alignment remains a subject of scientific debate to this day. In the early modern period, the stones were often shrouded in mystical interpretation, and during the National Socialist era, they were ideologically instrumentalized, which complicated objective research for a long time. Today, the Externsteine are strictly protected as a nature reserve and attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, who can reach observation platforms via stairs hewn into the stone.
