Augustusburg Palace in Brühl is regarded as one of Germany's most significant Baroque and Rococo buildings and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984, along with the nearby Falkenlust hunting lodge. Construction began in 1725 at the behest of Clemens August of Bavaria, the Prince-Elector and Archbishop of Cologne, with renowned architects such as François de Cuvilliés and Balthasar Neumann playing leading roles. Especially famous is Balthasar Neumann's grand staircase, a masterpiece of architectural history featuring sweeping forms, delicate stucco work, and a magnificent ceiling fresco. The surrounding gardens, designed by Dominique Girard in the French style, are among the best-preserved examples of 18th-century European landscape art. In the post-war era, the palace served for decades as the primary venue for state receptions held by the West German federal government before the capital moved to Berlin. Today, the palace is a museum offering insights into the courtly life of the Age of Absolutism.
