Drachenburg Castle (Germany)

Weather…

Drachenburg Castle was erected between 1882 and 1884 in record time on the Drachenfels hill near Königswinter. The wealthy stockbroker Stephan von Sarter commissioned the construction in Neo-Gothic style, though he never actually resided in the palatial estate himself. The architecture combines medieval stylistic elements with the most modern technology of the late 19th century, such as an early form of central heating and gas lighting. Following Sarter's death, the castle underwent a diverse history of use, serving as a boarding school, a Catholic institution, and a training center for the imperial railway. In the 1970s, a private individual named Paul Spinat saved the building from decay and opened it to the public. Since 1986, the estate has been under heritage protection and was extensively renovated between 1995 and 2010. Today, it functions as a museum for the domestic culture of the Gründerzeit era and is a central part of the Siebengebirge nature reserve.
