The Bundeshaus in Bonn was the seat of the most important constitutional bodies of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1999, including the Bundestag and the Bundesrat. Originally built in 1930 as a Pedagogical Academy on the banks of the Rhine, the building was redesigned after World War II under the direction of architect Hans Schwippert for its new role as the seat of parliament. Schwippert's design was characterized by transparency and functionalism, intended to symbolize the country's democratic new beginning. Landmark political decisions were made in this building, such as the adoption of the Basic Law and the election of the first Federal Chancellors. With the relocation of parliament and government to Berlin in 1999, the Bundeshaus lost its central function. Today, the complex is known as the World Conference Center Bonn and is used for international conferences, while the historic plenary chamber has been preserved as a monument and venue accessible to visitors.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
