Königsstuhl (Rügen) (Germany)

Weather…

The Königsstuhl is the most prominent and famous chalk cliff on the island of Rügen within Jasmund National Park. Rising 118 meters almost vertically from the Baltic Sea, it forms the centerpiece of the island's renowned chalk coastline. Geologically, the cliff consists of soft chalk formed during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 million years ago, from the skeletal remains of marine microorganisms. The Königsstuhl gained worldwide fame through the paintings of the Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich, who captured the rugged beauty of the coast in his works. Due to constant erosion and the threat of cliff collapses, the 'Skywalk Königsstein' was opened in 2023, a floating viewing platform that provides visitors with spectacular views without placing direct stress on the fragile rock. The adjacent National Park Center gives extensive exhibitions on the landscape's formation and the significance of the ancient beech forests, which have been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since 2011.
