Prora – KdF Resort Rügen (Germany)

Weather…

Prora, located on the island of Rügen, is a monumental building complex constructed between 1936 and 1939 as a seaside resort for the Nazi organization 'Kraft durch Freude' (KdF). With a planned length of 4.5 kilometers, the facility was designed to accommodate 20,000 vacationers at once and remains one of the largest construction projects of the Third Reich. Due to the outbreak of World War II, construction was halted, and the resort never opened for its original purpose. After 1945, the Soviet Army and later the National People's Army of the GDR used the site as barracks and a restricted military area. Today, the complex is a protected historical monument and has been largely privatized and converted into modern holiday apartments, hotels, and youth hostels. A documentation center on-site provides information about the ideological background and the varied history of this architectural giant on the Baltic coast.
