Limburg Cathedral (Germany)

Weather…

Limburg Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of St. George, towers prominently on a limestone cliff above the Lahn River in the Hessian town of Limburg. Built in the early 13th century, it is considered one of the most accomplished examples of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture in Germany. With its seven towers, the cathedral defines the skyline of the medieval old town and is visible from a great distance. Inside, the cathedral impresses with late Romanesque wall paintings that were uncovered during extensive restoration work in the 20th century. The architecture features a narrow, high central nave and a four-story wall system typical of the Rhenish late Romanesque style. Since 1827, the building has served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Limburg, housing valuable sacred art treasures and a significant archive. The cathedral is closely linked to the history of the Counts of Diez and attracts thousands of architecture enthusiasts from around the world each year.
