Frankfurt's St. Paul's Church (Paulskirche) is regarded as the cradle of German democracy and is a national monument of paramount importance. Originally built as an Evangelical Lutheran church between 1789 and 1833, it became the meeting place for the Frankfurt National Assembly, the first freely elected parliament for all of Germany in 1848. Here, delegates drafted the St. Paul's Church Constitution, which established fundamental civil liberties and the vision of a unified German nation-state. Although the Revolution of 1848/49 ultimately failed, the basic rights formulated here served as a milestone for subsequent German constitutions. During World War II, the building was almost completely destroyed in air raids in 1944 and gutted by fire. Reconstruction took place shortly after the war ended, designated as the 'House of All Germans,' with its simple and dignified architecture symbolizing a fresh start. Today, St. Paul's is no longer used for religious services but serves as a venue for significant state ceremonies and the awarding of the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
