Beelitz Asparagus (Germany)

Weather…

Beelitz Asparagus (Beelitzer Spargel) is a culinary delicacy famous far beyond the borders of Brandenburg. Cultivation in the Beelitz region began in 1861, when master glazier Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Hermann planted the first asparagus crown in a local field. The sandy soil of the Beelitz outwash plain provides handy conditions for the growth of this premium vegetable, as it warms up quickly and has minimal resistance to the rising stalks. Today, the cultivation area covers around 1,500 hectares, yielding several thousand tons of white and green asparagus annually. The harvest season, which traditionally runs from late April until St. John's Day (June 24), shapes the social life of the town with folk festivals and the crowning of the Beelitz Asparagus Queen. 'Beelitzer Spargel' is a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), ensuring its authentic origin and high quality. During the season, numerous farms invite visitors to enjoy freshly prepared dishes and purchase produce directly from the fields. Through this tradition, Beelitz has firmly established itself as Germany's premier 'Asparagus City.'
